We will touch on a few points about achieving superior surface quality.
The success of a welding operation also depends on the heat input at the joint. Whether the heat comes from an arc or from a fuel gas flame, as soon as it is applied to the area to be welded it begins to travel away through the metal in both directions, because the metal is at a lower temperature; a temperature gradient forms in the metal as a result. To achieve fusion, therefore, the rate of heat input into the joint must be greater than the rate of heat conduction in the parent metal. That makes the thermal conductivity of the parent plate one of the most important factors to consider when choosing welding conditions. The various metals used in manufacturing conduct heat at different rates. During welding, for example, heat travels away far faster in copper than in steel. That means the heat must be applied at a higher rate in a copper joint than in a steel joint of similar thickness in order to achieve fusion.
