Using a Plate (Sheet) Bevelling Machine

Using a Plate (Sheet) Bevelling Machine

This guide contains information on the use and set-up, tool change, cleaning and maintenance of the manually fed plate bevelling machine, known as a plate bevelling machine.

This guide explains step by step how plate bevelling machines are used. In brief, this article covers the following subjects,

  • The components of the SKF 25 plate bevelling machine
  • Safety precautions before the plate bevelling machine is set up
  • Checking the workpiece
  • Adjusting the milling head of the plate bevelling machine
  • Adjusting the plate bevelling machine for the bevel width
  • Fitting the rollers of the bevelling machine
  • Milling with the plate bevelling machine
  • Using the plate bevelling unit
  • Changing the tools of the bevelling machine
  • Cleaning the bevelling machine
  • Maintenance of the bevelling machine

Safety precautions before the plate bevelling machine is set up

The bevelling machine must be operated only in the horizontal position. Secure the workpiece.

Checking the properties of the workpiece.

The surface of the workpiece must meet the following requirements. The surface must be smooth and free of burn marks, slag, weld spots or similar damage. Clean off surface roughness before starting to mill.

Adjusting the milling head Place the machine on its upper side (power supply cable). Release the locking mechanism (2) on both sides of the machine. Set the milling angle you want. The milling angle can be read on the scale (1). Tighten the locking mechanisms (2) on both sides of the machine.

Adjusting the bevel width Place the machine on its upper side (power supply cable). Release the locking mechanism (1). Set the bevel angle you want by turning the adjusting screw (3). The bevel width can be read on the scale (2). Tighten the locking mechanism (1).

Fitting the guide roller for milling plate

Fit the plate (3) as shown in the drawing. Fit the guide rollers (2) into the hole (1) with the washer and nut.

Milling with the plate bevelling machine
Proceed as follows for milling:

  • ‹  Align the workpiece horizontally and secure it.
  • ‹  Fit the guide roller according to the application required; see the section Fitting the guide roller.
  • ‹  Set the milling angle and the bevel width; see the sections Adjusting the milling angle and Adjusting the bevel width.
  • ‹  Plug the machine into the mains socket.
  • ‹  Place the machine on the workpiece so that the milling tool does not engage the workpiece.
  • ‹  Switch the machine on; see the section Switching on the plate bevelling machine.
  • ‹  Slide the plate bevelling machine slowly from right to left in the direction of the arrow. The tool works against the direction of travel.
  • ‹  Switch the plate bevelling machine off; see the section Switching the plate bevelling machine on/off.
  • ‹  Unplug the machine from the mains socket.

CAUTION

There is a risk of damage if the machine is used improperly!

►Follow the instructions below to prevent damage.

►Position the connecting cable so that it cannot be caught by the running machine.

NOTE

Follow the instructions below.

►Do not engage the material with the indexable insert while the machine is at standby.

►Maintain an even feed.

Using the plate bevelling machine

The following procedure shows how the plate bevelling machine is operated:

Switching the machine on

  • ‹  Turn the main switch (1) to position "1".
  • ‹  Press the green push button (2) to switch the milling motor on. The yellow indicator light (4) comes on.

Switching the machine off

  • ‹  Press the red push button (3) to switch the milling motor off.
  • ‹  Turn the main switch (1) to position "0".

Restarting after an overload

‹ To switch the machine on after an overload, press the red push button (3) first and then the green push button (2).

NOTE

► In the event of a temporary overload the red indicator light (5) flashes.

► In the event of a continuous overload the red indicator light (5) comes on and the milling motor switches off.

Changing the tools (indexable inserts) of the plate bevelling machine

WARNING: Risk of injury!

►  Do not use damaged, dirty or worn tools (indexable inserts).

►  Change the tools (indexable inserts) only when the machine is switched off and at a standstill. Unplug the machine from the mains socket.

►  Use only tools (indexable inserts), adapters and accessories suitable for the machine.

Indexing the insert

Place the machine on its upper side (power supply cable).

  • ‹  Undo the screw (2).
  • ‹  Remove the guard (1).
  • ‹  Remove the clamping screw (3), index the insert and tighten the clamping screw again.
  • ‹  Repeat the same procedure for all the inserts of the milling tool.
  • ‹  Refit the guard and tighten the screw (2).

Replacing the inserts

When an insert is completely worn it has to be replaced with a new one:

‹ Undo the clamping screw and remove the insert.

‹ Fit the insert and tighten the fixing screws again.
