Choosing a CHALLENGE blade takes two questions, and both change the order code. First, the machine body: CH12, CH15 and CH26 are separate bodies with different bevel capacities, and their blades do not interchange. V02814 and V03380 are CH12 blades, V03385 and V03601 are CH15, V03480 and V03603 are CH26. Second, the material being cut. The carbon steel version runs on carbon and low-alloy plate. The stainless version is reserved for stainless, which work-hardens and sticks in the cutting zone — run it with a carbon-steel blade and the edge dulls fast and the finish suffers. The rule holds in reverse too: putting a stainless blade on carbon plate is simply not economic. Shops that handle both therefore keep two blade lines for the same machine and change over with the material. On these machines the milling blade is the only wear part, and the three most reliable signs that it is due are a drop in bevel finish, a change in cutting note, and swarf that stops coming off in clean form.
