On heavy sections, choosing a preparation is a volume calculation. A straight V opens in proportion to thickness; a J narrows the root with a radius and limits how far the groove opens toward the surface. The result at the same thickness is less filler metal, fewer passes and less heat input. This GBC family gives an EDGE 80, EDGE 80 Reverse or MULTIEDGE 80 that R=6 J geometry. There are two lines and they answer different needs. K20303 is the conversion kit: the tooling ordered to put the machine into its J-bevel configuration, and the starting point if the machine has not cut a J preparation before. K20299 is the consumable side: the R=6 round insert for carbon steel, supplied in a box of ten. The kit is bought once; the inserts are reordered for as long as the job runs. The round insert leaves no sharp corner at the root, which bears directly on root-pass penetration and on how clean the bottom of the groove is. When planning an order, holding at least one box of inserts alongside the kit is enough to keep the machine off standby.
