For Using Circular Cutters, Professional Tips on Better Service Life of Circular Cutter and Magnetic Drill Press, Basic Safety Instruction on Using Magnetic Drilling Machine, Using Magnetic Drilling Machine, Instructions on Horizontal or Overhead Drilling, Instructions on Material to be Drilled, Cleaning Magnetic Drilling Machine after Use, etc.
A. Selection of Magnetic Punching Machine:
There are various types of magnetic drilling machines available on the market, choose the most suitable magnetic drilling machine or magnetic drill press for your purpose. The types of magnetic drilling machines are detailed in our previous article: Types of Magnetic Drilling Machine
B. Selection of Circular Cutters:
Basically the annular cutters are of two types, High Speed Steel (HSS) Circular Cutters and Tungsten Carbide Tipped (TCT) Circular Cutters. We recommend using HSS Circular Cutters for your normal drilling jobs, because HSS circular cutters are cheaper in price, can be re-sharpened, need less RPM, which reduces the load on your magnetic drilling machine and prolongs the machines service life.
TCT Circular Cutters should only be used when drilling diameters larger than 40 mm (1 9/16 in.) because above these diameters TTCT Circular Cutters are cheaper in price and faster to drill.
TCT Circular Cutters should also be used when drilling very hard materials such as stainless steel drilling, HARDOX drilling, INOX drilling, etc. For normal metals that are not too hard, HSS Circular Cutters are best.
C. The following are Instructions on How to Use the Magnetic Drill Press and Circular Cutter Professionally:
- Select the correct circular cutter for the material to be drilled.
- Select the correct ejector pin for the cutter length.
- Insert the ejector pin into the circular cutter. Never use a circular cutter without the ejector pin.

- Place the annular cutter on the machine spindle and tighten the screws correctly.
- Move the machine towards the mark where the hole is to be drilled and locate the mark with the help of the pilot pin by touching the tip of the pilot pin on the mark.
- After positioning the machine at the mark where the hole is to be made, turn on the magnet switch of the magnetic drilling machine. Check that the magnet indicator lights GREEN. If the magnet indicators light RED, this means that the magnet does not have enough material underneath for perfect adhesion. In an ideal situation, the material to be drilled should have a minimum thickness of 8 mm (5/16 inch).

- Fill the coolant tank with lubricant. Never use the machine without lubricant. Use cutting oil for HSS circular cutters and water soluble coolant for TCT circular cutters.
- Set the correct RPM on the machine for the size of cutter used. RPM (n) calculation formula n = (v X 1000) / (d X 3.14)‘is . Where v is the cutting speed of the circular cutter and d is the diameter of the circular cutter. You can also use our website to calculate the RPM automatically. Please click on this link:
- Turn ON the coolant tank switch of the magnetic drill press.

10. You must use internal lubrication when drilling with circular cutters and also use external lubrication when drilling over 50 mm (1 15/16 in.) thick.
11. Turn ON the motor switch of the magnetic drill press and start drilling with slow feed. Do not strike the cutter against the material.
12. Start drilling at a steady and constant feed rate. Too slow or too fast a feed rate will damage the circular cutter.

13. Check that the lubricant is coming out. Use too much lubricant for good results.
14. Applying too much pressure on the feed lever will not speed up the drilling process; instead it will break the circular cutters.
15. Drill with less pressure and constant feed for the best results and longer service life of circular cutters.

16. You should use backfeed when cutting deep holes to avoid the formation of long chips.
17. Clean the work area with BDS PowerWORKER or suitable cleaning tool after drilling to avoid accidents.
18. Perfect drilling with the above instructions will result in perfectly finished holes in less time and longer service life of both cutter and machine.

J. Check the condition of the surface (material to be drilled):
The magnetic compression force depends on the condition of the substrate. The clamping force is significantly reduced by paint, zinc and lime coatings and rust. To achieve sufficient magnetic clamping force, the substrate must meet the following conditions:
The substrate must be magnetic.
The clamping surface and magnetic foot must be clean and free of grease.
The clamping surface must be perfectly smooth and flat.
Clean the substrate and the magnetic foot of the magnetic drilling machine (magnetic drill press) before use.
Remove all roughness and loose rust from the substrate.
The best clamping effect is achieved on a low carbon steel substrate with a thickness of at least 20 mm.
Low thickness steel: When drilling low thickness steel, an additional steel plate (minimum dimensions 100 x 200 x 20 mm) must be placed under the workpiece. Secure the steel plate to prevent it from falling.
NF (non-ferrous or non-magnetic) metals or workpieces with uneven surfaces: A special holding device must be used when drilling in NF metals or workpieces with uneven surfaces.
